Overseas Golf Event in Portugal
For those avid TT bloggers (??!!) you may have seen my previous post with regard to my impending golf event at Vila Sol, Portugal. Firstly I must say that the client had no clue that the administration from the Vila Sol end was just pathetic! They enjoyed the event tremendously and have requested to have their event at Vila Sol again for the 3rd consecutive year.
When I first arrived in Portugal, I met with our event guy at Vila Sol (who I later learned was a trainee) and his boss Bruno. Yes everything had been checked and double checked. However, just small problems arose throughout the three days which were fairly significant if they hadn’t been spotted with the point of staff throughout the hotel.
For instance, we had a Nearest Pin and Longest Drive competition in the morning’s competition and I just mentioned to the Caddie if he had done it. He wasn’t told!! Marvellous. However, he did go out straight away and put them out himself which was fantastic.
Then I was just checking again if the front office had notes of the taxis to pick up some directors at Faro Airport. Only one had been input on the system and not the two. Fabulous!
Then I began checking everything down to the three couples who were extending their stay for the weekend. No they only had one couple. Tremendous!
So on my departure, having had all my clients leave Vila Sol, I made a point of saying that I would like to say Hello to the General Manager. He wasn’t around so was introduced to Frank, the Operations Manager. I have to say I so extremely unsatisfied with our event manager but did tell him that everything else was truly magnificent, right down to the doorman. They couldn’t have been more helpful and efficient. But we all know that if the paperwork hasn’t been correctly managed, it all could have gone horribly wrong. I got the distinct impression he knew nothing about our group being kicked out of L’Olive as they had double booked that too. Instead we had a lovely evening by the poolside but it was VERY chilly.
But to re-iterate our client knew nothing about these issues and I suppose that’s why we are around to make sure events run smoothly, that’s our job. But the events team at Vila Sol did make it extremely tough!
I just hope this young guy is not our point of contact next year!
