A Quick Guide to the Chelsea Flower Show 2018

Corporate HospitalityTuesday 22nd – Saturday 26th May 2018

The Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show has remained popular since its inception in 1862 as ‘The Great Spring Show’. The RHS had been holding shows since 1833 and, before they formalised proceedings, fetes had been a social fixture stretching back into our prehistory. In 2005 the number of days that the show stays open for extended from 4 to 5 (with the first 2 for members only) and this is a format that doesn’t look like it will change anytime soon, nor does its site: it has remained in the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea almost every year since it first moved there in 1905.

Corporate HospitalityWith 338 stands and 27 gardens, this year’s Chelsea Flower Show has plenty to entertain. Previous years have seen the inclusion of Gnomes (2013 only), a garden made entirely of plasticine (well done, James May), and a garden that was nothing but grasses (never repeated).  If you have a genuine interest in plants, and are not just there for the social aspect, there is no greater gathering of minds for you to pick and speaking to the exhibitors is thoroughly encouraged. Although this is one of the most famous horticultural events on the calendar and it may surprise you to learn that the dress code is… unwritten; it is fairly straightforward though:

Dress Code

Comfortable shoes are a must, you’ll be on your feet for most of the day.

Big hats are a no, you’d be blocking other people’s view.

Only carry a rucksack if you must, you wouldn’t want someone to knock you over with theirs so it’s best not to take one if you can avoid it.

Denim is a no (it is the Devil’s cloth after all)

Gentlemen should aim for a jacket and tie, and ladies a day dress.
