The Grand National is perhaps the most famous horse race in the calendar and the one that encourages those not normally predisposed to gamble to have a little flutter. Although the exact start year is disputed, this event has remained a popular fixture throughout its nearly 200 year history. The Aintree course has earned notoriety as the one of the toughest circuits and this makes for some truly memorable sporting moments. Whether you’re there for the horses or simply the atmosphere, here is what you need to know.

Getting there

By Road

Where the M57 and M58 meet there is a large roundabout, this is Junction 6 on the M57. If travelling on the M58, merge onto the A59 and keep left but be careful not to accidentally get into the M57. At this roundabout take the A59 heading South. The racecourse will be on the left after about a mile and a half.

By Rail

Aintree Station is literally across the road from the race-course. If travelling from London the best station to depart from is Euston with a journey time of around 3h15.

Dress code

There is no official dress code except that sports clothes and fancy dress is not allowed. Smart clothing is preferable and ladies often adopt hats but are not obliged to.
