The Four Generation Workforce

As the retirement age continues to creep up, many organisations are finding, for the first time, that they have four different generations co-existing in the same workforce. And while the accumulation of different perspectives, skills, ideas, and ways of working opens up new opportunities, it undoubtedly brings challenges too.

We wanted to delve deeper into employees’ experiences of the workplace to learn more about intergenerational team relationships and the steps employers are taking to build and reinforce positive, cohesive team dynamics.

We worked with Censuswide to conduct a nationally representative survey of more than 1,000 office workers across the UK – those that spend at least some of their working week stationed from a company HQ. The sample includes representation from Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, Baby Boomer generations, as well as a range of sectors, business sizes, and levels of seniority.

In this e-guide, we explore:

  • How employees of different generations perceive their colleague relationships
  • The key issues causing friction in the workplace
  • How often businesses bring employees together for social or team building events
  • Experiences of team building events, and the real business impact they deliver in the short and long term

Our findings are paired with expert insights and practical tips from Team Tactics specialists.

Connected and Considered

Our first research report painted a picture of mixed picture of today’s workplace relationships and showed just how impactful team building can be to help remedy many of the challenges impacting the four-generation workforce, from communication to collaboration.

Yet, for employers to maximise the wide-ranging and long-lasting impacts team building can bring, they must first ensure their team activities effectively cater to their employees, respecting and representing the full diversity of their workforce.

We worked with Censuswide to survey more than 1,000 UK office workers with a view to understand more about their team building experiences to date, and how well they felt these activities had catered to the workforce.

In this e-guide, we explore:

  • How inclusive and accessible employees have found their team building experiences to date
  • Challenges hindering the planning process
  • Practical tips for a more careful and considered approach
  • How organisations can align team building with employee values and interests
  • The value of purpose-led team building
